As of December 4, there has been cases in over a dozen states and is likely to increase in the coming days and weeks. The first detected case was from a person who returned to San Francisco from South Africa.
Due to increasing confirmed cases of the variant, new lockdown measures and travel restrictions are being imposed.

There is much that still remains unknown with the Omicron variant. In South Africa where the variant was first discovered, it is already the dominant form of the virus and a rise in covid cases has been experienced, primarily those that has already been infected previously. It is also reported that the virus seems to be spreading twice as quickly as the Delta variant, which is the most contagious variant of the virus.
Still, the emergence of the Omicron variant is so recent that it may take a while for experts to have definite answers to all our questions.
